When you think about your University Legal Services Plan, estate planning and divorce probably come to mind first. Maybe you’ve used it to write a will or get help with a real estate transaction. But what many University employees don’t realize is that this benefit goes far beyond the basics.

Tucked into the fine print are a range of services that could make your life easier, help you avoid costly mistakes, and reduce legal stress in everyday situations. If you’re enrolled in the plan, here are some valuable benefits you might not even know you have.

1. Identity Theft Support

Identity fraud is on the rise, and resolving it can be time-consuming and emotionally draining. The Legal Services Plan includes support to help restore your credit and dispute fraudulent activity. If your identity is compromised, you can access legal guidance to help navigate the recovery process and get your finances back on track.

2. Personal Contract Review

Ever hire a contractor for home repairs or lend money to a friend? If there’s a written agreement involved, your plan may allow you to have an attorney review the contract before you sign. Whether it’s a service agreement, a private loan, or an equipment lease, getting a second set of eyes can prevent misunderstandings and protect your interests.

3. Consumer Protection Disputes

Have you ever purchased something expensive that turned out to be defective or never arrived? Or maybe you paid for a service that was never completed. Your Legal Services Plan may cover assistance for these kinds of consumer disputes. An attorney can help you understand your rights and pursue a resolution if needed.

4. Traffic Ticket Defense

Some types of traffic violations are eligible for legal defense under the plan. This can be especially helpful if you’re contesting a ticket and want to avoid points on your license or increased insurance costs. The plan may provide representation or guidance for qualifying infractions.

5. Small Claims Court Guidance

Need to take someone to small claims court or defend yourself? While the plan doesn’t usually include representation in small claims court, it often provides assistance preparing your documents, organizing your case, and understanding the process.

6. Immigration Assistance

Depending on your plan structure, you may also have access to legal help with immigration matters for yourself or your eligible dependents. This might include help with green card renewals or naturalization paperwork. Be sure to confirm with the plan provider what’s available to you.

Why These Hidden Benefits Matter

Most employees only think to use legal services when something big happens—like buying a house or going through a divorce. But smaller legal needs pop up more often than you might expect. Knowing what’s covered helps you avoid spending money on services that are already included in your benefit package.

Many of these services can be used proactively. Reviewing a contract before you sign it or getting guidance on a dispute early can save you time, money, and frustration later on.

What’s Not Covered

Like any benefit, there are limits. The plan typically does not cover:

  • Business disputes

  • Legal action involving your employer (the University)

  • Legal issues that began before you enrolled

  • Representation in criminal matters beyond traffic tickets

Always refer to the full plan booklet or contact the provider for clarification.

Make the Most of Your Plan

Here’s how to take advantage of these hidden gems:

  • Review your plan benefits at least once a year

  • Bookmark the member portal so it’s easy to access when you need it

  • Don’t wait until a situation becomes urgent—reach out early

This benefit exists to support you. The more familiar you are with what it offers, the more value you’ll get from it.
